You are looking for a basketball court surface and everywhere you see the same words: professional, certified, highest quality. Every manufacturer says its tiles are the best. How do you tell marketing from real properties? You only need to know which parameters matter and how to read them. The rest filters itself out.
Shock absorption - the most important parameter, most often misrepresented
Shock absorption - energy absorption on impact - is the parameter that directly affects the health of your knees and ankles. The higher the shock absorption, the less load reaches the joints when landing after a jump.
How to read it: shock absorption is given as a percentage. A basketball surface should absorb at least 25% of impact energy - that is the lower limit of FIBA Level 1. A good surface falls in the 30-45% range. Above 50% it becomes too soft - the game loses dynamism and the ball bounces worse.
What to watch for: if a manufacturer gives shock absorption without stating the test standard, the number means nothing. "35% shock absorption" to EN 14904 is a specific, verifiable value. "Excellent shock absorption" with no number - that is marketing only.
Ball bounce - a condition of playability
A basketball must bounce predictably. The FIBA standard specifies a minimum of 90% bounce relative to a hard reference surface. Below that value the court is dead - the ball behaves unpredictably and dribbling becomes harder.
Modular surfaces of polypropylene and elastomer meet this requirement. A cheap plastic tile from an unknown source - often does not. The only reliable verification is a FIBA certificate or laboratory test results in the product data sheet.
Friction coefficient - between slip and twist
The friction coefficient decides how the shoe contacts the surface. Too low - the surface is a slide, fall risk. Too high - a sharp change of direction ends in an ankle twist because the shoe stops and the body does not.
FIBA range: 0.5-0.7. A good basketball surface sits exactly in that band. A manufacturer who declares only "high grip" without a value - gives no safety guarantee.
FIBA certification - what it actually confirms
FIBA certification is not a sticker the manufacturer prints itself. It is the result of testing in an accredited laboratory covering all key parameters. Certification is issued for a specific product formulation and has an expiry date - typically 3-5 years.
How to verify: ask the manufacturer for the certificate document with number and expiry date. You can check the number in the public FIBA database. If the manufacturer does not have the document to hand or says the "product meets FIBA requirements" without a certificate - that is not certification.

UV stability - colours that do not fade
A court stands outdoors all year. UV radiation destroys colours and material structure - but only in cheaper products without UV stabilisers in the polypropylene mass. A good modular surface has UV stabilisers built into the tile material, not applied on the surface.
Effect: colour holds for years without fading. On the cheapest tiles, after one season you can already see the difference between shaded and sun-exposed areas.
Temperature resistance - Polish winters and heat
An outdoor surface in Poland must handle the full range of conditions: frost down to -20°C in winter and heat above 40°C in summer. Good polypropylene modular surfaces operate from -40°C to +70°C without losing mechanical properties - tiles do not crack, deform, or lose anti-slip performance.
The cheapest tiles crumble at the connections and edges in severe frost. Verification: the operating temperature range should be stated in the product data sheet.
Short checklist - what to look for when buying
- shock absorption given as a percentage with reference to a standard (min. 25%, ideally 30-45%),
- ball bounce minimum 90% to standard,
- friction coefficient 0.5-0.7,
- current FIBA certificate with a number that can be verified,
- operating temperature range in the data sheet,
- UV stabilisers built into the material mass.
