Modular surfaces are designed to be maintenance-free - and largely they are. They do not require seasonal sealing, painting, or specialist maintenance treatments. A few simple rules of use however ensure the court keeps its parameters and appearance for many years with no additional costs.
Regular cleaning - how and with what
Basic maintenance of modular surfacing is regular removal of mechanical debris: sand, leaves, mud, sand blown in by wind. Sand between tiles acts like sandpaper - the longer it stays, the more it wears the surface.
What works:
- sweeping with an ordinary broom or leaf blower - effective for dry debris,
- washing with water from a hose or pressure washer (pressure up to 100 bar) - removes mud and algae,
- scrubbing with a brush and water with mild detergent - for more stubborn dirt.
What to avoid:
- sharp tools and metal brushes - they scratch the surface,
- aggressive chemicals, solvents, bleach - they damage the plastic structure,
- steam cleaner at high temperature - can deform tiles.
Seasonal inspection
Once a year - ideally at the start of the spring season - it is worth walking the entire court and checking:
- whether any tile is lifted or bulging (signal of uneven sub-base),
- whether all clip connections are tight,
- whether water has collected under the court or weeds have grown,
- court line condition - with lines from coloured tiles there is no wear risk, but check whether any are damaged.
Replacing damaged tiles
A damaged tile (crack, mechanical damage, permanent staining) is replaced in a few minutes. Just pry the tile from the edge, pull it out of the clips, and snap in a new one. No tools or service crew required.
It is worth keeping a small spare stock of tiles - especially colours used for court lines. When ordering surfacing, order 3-5% extra for possible future replacements.
Court use - what to avoid
Modular surfaces are not designed for very high point loads - vehicles with small wheels (forklifts, heavy cargo bikes) can permanently deform tiles. Sports shoes, even with turf studs, are not a problem - but shoes with metal spikes (for track sprinting) can damage the surface.
Winter and frost
Enlio modular surfaces withstand temperatures from -40°C to +70°C without losing parameters. They do not require dismantling for winter. If winter is snowy, snow can be removed with a plastic shovel - a metal one can scratch the surface. Sodium chloride de-icers are generally safe for polypropylene, but it is better to use them sparingly.
